Preseason Coaches' Poll 1. Skyline 2. Blackfoot 3. Bonneville 4. Shelley 5. Hillcrest Written by: Brandon Baney 2020 was one of those storybook seasons at Skyline High, where a loaded senior class dominated the competition en route to a 12-1 record and the Class 4A state championship. Skyline's only loss a year ago came to Rigby, the runner-up in Class 5A. With so many talented seniors gone, though, it's time for a new chapter to be written. Starting quarterback Cade Marlow is gone, as are his top two receivers Connor Maloney and Eli Ames. In fact, every skill position on offense will feature a first-time starter in 2021. Head coach Scott Berger says that won't be a problem. "By using the spread offense, we are able to utilize the athletes that we put on the field," Berger said. "We use a variety of formations and stretch a defense horizontally and vertically." Senior running back/slot back Abrahn Silverio and junior wide receiver Kenyon Sadiq both saw playing time a year ago in reserve roles. The other receiver spots in the Skyline spread offense will likely be filled by juniors Caden Taggart and George Price. They will help break in a new starting quarterback, junior Lachlan Haacke. Junior Tui Edwin is a returning starter on the offensive line. Defensively, Skyline watched a couple of leaders graduate in the offseason as defensive lineman Brixton Gilbert, linebacker Karsen Jensen and cornerback Christean Thomas were all vital to Skyline's success a year ago. "Our overall strength of the defense is team speed and quickness," Berger said. "We are able to attack offenses in a variety of ways." Linebacker Chandler Robinson will lead a young defensive unit in 2021. Skyline has loaded up their schedule once again with difficult opponents. The Grizzlies will open their season on August 27th at the Rocky Mountain Rumble against Green Canyon High from Logan, Utah. They will also play Class 5A opponents Rigby, Thunder Ridge, Idaho Falls and Madison. An early season conference showdown with Blackfoot on September 17th could ultimately decide the High Country title. "We are excited about our young talent and playmakers we have in the program," Berger said. "We are planning on continuing the success we have had the past few seasons."
