It’s been in the works for a while but, finally, the Logos Knights will compete as a varsity football program in the 1A Division 1 White Pine League. Fans in District 2 know about the Knights but, for those of you who may not know, it is pronounced “low-goss,” the Greek word for “word.”
The small school located in Moscow has been building toward this for a while. Head coach Nick Holloway says the school will field five teams this coming season, starting with 3rd and 4th graders and continuing on up through the high school varsity team.
“It’s our first year as a varsity team,” Holloway said. “I’m excited to see what this group of seniors, who have very little experience playing football, can do.”
The school has had success in other sports (the boys basketball team won 16 games and reached the 1A Division 2 state tournament in 2019) so there are athletes to be found. Getting them up to speed on a different game will be part of Holloway’s challenge.
“As a first-year varsity program, we have little football experience and much of our success will depend on how quickly this team learns,” he said.
The team won four junior-varsity games last fall, which helped them gain experience. But now they’re stepping right into one of the toughest conferences in Idaho. The 1A Division 1 White Pine league features perennial power Prairie along with uber-athletic Lapwai, tough Clearwater Valley, strong Kamiah, talented Genesee, and others. There are no soft landing points for a team playing its first full-varsity schedule.
Holloway has two experienced linemen up front in seniors River Sumpter and Judah Merkle. They’ll be asked to open holes for senior running back Aiden Elmore and provide time for passes to be delivered to senior receivers Liev Comis, Will Casebolt, and Jackson Crapuchettes. The staff hopes to be able to find a good balance between the run and the pass.
Logos has its own football field adjacent to Mountain View Park in Moscow. Coaches expect roughly 30 student-athletes to play football this fall at the high-school level, which will allow for varsity and junior varsity games and practices. The momentum in the school’s athletic department is trending in the right direction. It’s likely not fair to judge the Knights of 2021 solely on their wins and losses, but rather the progress made within the season as they gain experience and confidence in the tough White Pine.
