Preseason Coaches' Poll 1. Coeur d'Alene 2. Post Falls 3. Lake City 4. Lewiston Written by: Brandon Baney There haven't been many programs that can match Coeur d'Alene's consistency, year in and year out. It seems that the Vikings are marching deep into the playoffs every November, saying goodbye to several talented players the following May, and gearing up to do it again in August. Under 25th year head coach Shawn Amos, the Coeur d'Alene football program is a well-oiled machine. A year ago, Coeur d'Alene went 10-1. Their lone loss came in the Class 5A semifinals to eventual state champion Rocky Mountain 36-21. And while several talented players from last year's squad are gone, there are still plenty of capable playmakers back in 2021. "Although many starters were lost to graduation, the offense was able to build quality depth last year," said Amos. "An excited group of seniors are ready to make their mark." Two of those seniors, tight end Cameren Cope and running back Gunner Giulio, have been playing varsity ball since they were sophomores. They will help break in new starting quarterback Brayden Bengston. Another plus in Bengston's favor is the offensive line should be solid once again. Jaxson Washington was an All-Conference performer a year ago, and Wyatt Sanford has drawn the attention of several college coaches on the recruiting trail. "Defensively, many holes will need to be filled, as graduation hit every position group," said Amos. "The defensive line returns some dominant pieces, but will need to gain depth from new faces." As good as Cameren Cope is at tight end, he might be even better at defensive end. Cope will be counted on to lead a defensive line unit that will feature several newcomers. "The linebacker group will be inexperienced, but talented as they look to take advantage of their opportunities," said Amos. "The secondary returns some experience and has some talented youngsters." Isaiah Griffin is the unquestioned leader of the secondary, and earned All-State and All-Conference accolades a year ago. With so many new pieces in place, Amos said "The key will be building practice habits and trust to carry over to games." If the last several years are any indication, Coeur d'Alene will build that chemistry early and prepare themselves for what should be another deep postseason run.
