David Young begins his 20th season as head coach of the Skyview Hawks with a new quarterback but with several All-SIC players returning and a favorable early season schedule.
Coming off a 4-3 record in 2020, the Hawks open the season at Columbia August 27th, then host Nampa September 3rd before playing at Boise September 10th. The Hawks might just jump to a 3-0 start before hitting the bulk of their schedule with Owyhee and Rocky Mountain to finish the month of September.
First team All-SIC defensive lineman Charles Judy is back for his senior season and will not only anchor an improved Skyview defense but also the Hawks offensive line. Judy is one of three offensive linemen who started at least part time last year. Charlie Mickelson, who earned second team All-SIC OL honors and Regan Magill will provide first year starting quarterback Max Cutforth a veteran wall of protection as he attempts to improve the Skyview passing game.
Last year the Hawks relied on the legs of quarterback Clayton Franssen but this year coach Young feels the Hawks passing game could be the answer to compete for a playoff spot and maybe even the Skyview’s first ever state football crown. “We run a power pistol spread offense designed to maximize the strength of our athletes” says Coach Young.
The Hawks return all conference wide receiver Camden Young plus TerRyek Pennington, which should provide Cutforth with some experienced targets. Atonio Fifita is back for his senior season at running back where in 2020 he impressed voters enough to be named second team All-SIC running back.
Defensively, Skyview showed great improvement during the 2020 season and with most of the starting lineup returning coach Young sees that improvement continuing in 2021. Young says his secondary was much improved last year but says “We would like to see the secondary take the next step by becoming more aggressive”.
There is no question that the biggest hurdle for the Hawks in 2021 will be depth. “We only have 35 varsity players” says Coach Young. “Staying healthy will be the key.”
Still, Young feels Skyview could surprise some folks this fall. “Everyone will be picking Meridian, Rocky or Eagle” says Young, but he feels Skyview could be a sleeper.
Young is most excited to see his seniors shine. Two years ago as sophomores many were forced into 5A play because injuries and other factors shut down the JV program. “They were not ready at sophomores” says Young. “They are ready now.”
