The Bonneville Bees experienced lots of on-the-job training at the varsity level last season. 19 new starters, along an almost entirely new coaching staff, led to an 0-9 campaign that nonetheless provided some optimism.

The biggest positive is that a year after taking their lumps, almost all of Bonneville’s starters are back in 2021. “We were an extremely young team last year. We have nearly every starter back from last year’s team,” said second-year head coach Kevin Kempf. “We have become bigger, stronger, and faster in the off season. Because of this we plan to be a heavy run team mixed in with some play action.”

Sometimes a winless campaign can really affect the amount of players that want to participate in football. That hasn’t happened at Bonneville, though. “I think one of the biggest X factors for us will be our depth,” Kempf said. “We have over 150 kids on the team right now which allows us to have one-way players in each position.”

Among the players to watch at Bonneville this year is junior linebacker RJ Woods, who earned 1st Team All-Conference honors in 2020. Kempf said Woods will pair nicely with a pair of transfers on the defensive line in the Bees’ 3-4 scheme. “Kolton Dallimore transferred last year (from Thunder Ridge) but he wasn’t eligible to play varsity,” Kempf said. “Dalin Walker transferred here from Nampa High School. He is a 6-4, 240 lb. defensive end and is a total stud.”

Offensively, junior Jacob Perez returns after starting every game at quarterback as a sophomore in 2020. Kempf is excited about the potential between Perez and senior wide receiver Bryce Reeser. “Bryce is big, strong and fast,” Kempf said. “He broke his ankle early in the season last year, but has had a great offseason and will be an impact player for us.”

Overall, the Bees have had a strong offseason. “Our seniors have completely taken control of this year’s team,” Kempf said. Since January they have lead senior practices with the whole team that didn’t involve coaches. I am most excited about how they are leading this team.”

Kempf is hoping that senior leadership will help Bonneville stand out in the always loaded High Country Conference. “I think our conference is arguably the toughest in the state. The state champions generally come from here,” Kempf said. “That said, each week is a grind. We have great teams that we’ll face every week.”

Bonneville opens its’ season on the road against Minico. “I suspect they will be a top 5 team in the state,” Kempf said. “They have some studs over there and they are very well coached.”

After Minico, Bonneville returns home for non-conference games against Century and Preston, before traveling to 5A Madison to round out non-league play.
