Team Preview:

Written by: David Bashore

Kamiah took some lumps last season, going just 8-14 in 2014-15. The Kubs think they’ll be better for it in 2015-16, and there’s good reason.

Kamiah returns every player from its roster from a season ago, including leading scorers Parker Whipple and Chris Pethtel. Whipple, a senior forward, was a second-team all-conference selection last season. He is one of eight – possibly nine – seniors expected to contribute this season: Erik Messenger, Branson Ballantyne, Jacob Adams, Taylor McAlister, Joey Garcia, Garrison Bretz and Pethtel are the others. Lars Kludt could contribute after missing the last two seasons due to knee injuries.

That familiarity will benefit the younger players who come up this season, as well as the offense this season. Each player knows what is expected of him, and the scoring onus again will likely fall largely upon Pethtel and Whipple. Outside shooting should be better and help the overall team scoring as well.

Defensively Kamiah will be aggressive, stubborn and physical – hallmarks of any team wanting to survive in the White Pine League, let alone the 1A-I classification at large. Stout, fundamental defense will be key as Kamiah tries to get better in rebounding just by being a year older and stronger – the team is undersized.

The pieces are all there for Kamiah to have a great season: experience, savvy, veteran leadership and ability. Time will tell whether the Kubs are able to put it all together and emerge from a brutal White Pine League to make it to the Treasure Valley in March.
